How to enable monetization, step by step
You have crossed the thresholds — now the switch has to be flipped. This is the exact sequence from “eligible” to “ads running”, including the AdSense side that stalls most first applications. (Not sure you qualify yet? Check every route at once with the monetization checker.)
Before you apply: the 30-minute pre-flight
- 2-step verification on for the channel’s Google account — applications cannot proceed without it.
- No active strikes: check Studio › Settings › Channel › Feature eligibility. A live Community Guidelines strike blocks applying until it expires.
- Audit your catalogue against the reused/repetitious content rules — the top rejection causes. Ten minutes with the policies guide before applying beats thirty days of waiting after a rejection.
Step 1 — Open the Earn tab and start the application
In YouTube Studio (desktop is easiest), open Earn in the left menu. If your counters have crossed a route’s thresholds you will see an Apply button; click it and accept the Partner Program terms — the contract governing the 55% long-form and 45% Shorts revenue shares explained in the Partner Program guide.
Step 2 — Connect or create AdSense
Payments flow through Google AdSense, and this is where care pays:
- One account per person. If you have ever had AdSense (even for a website), link that account — duplicates get both accounts flagged.
- Exact legal name and address, matching your ID and bank account. Mismatches stall identity verification for weeks and are the single most common self-inflicted delay.
- The full AdSense sequence — identity, the PIN letter, tax forms, payment methods — has its own walkthrough in the AdSense guide.
Step 3 — The review
Reviewers check whether your channel’s main content follows the monetization policies. Typical wait: a few days to a month. Keep uploading normally — an active channel reviews well, and your watch-hour window keeps rolling either way. If rejected, Studio names the policy area and a reapply date; the recovery sequence is in the policies guide.
Step 4 — After approval: switch things on deliberately
- Default ad settings: Studio › Earn lets you enable ads on all existing videos at once — do it, then spot-check your biggest videos.
- Mid-rolls: videos over 8:00 support them; auto-placement is serviceable, manual placement at natural breaks is better.
- Shorts module: accept it if you post Shorts, or feed revenue simply isn’t shared with you.
- Expectations: revenue appears in Analytics within ~48 hours; realistic first figures come from the earnings calculator, and your true rate emerges after a month via the RPM calculator.
The three most common stalls, pre-solved
“The Apply button is greyed out” — a counter is short (Studio’s Earn numbers govern, not third-party trackers), a strike is active, or 2-step is off. “AdSense says verify identity” — upload the ID matching the payee name; do not create a second account. “Approved but no money showing” — check ads are actually enabled per video, and remember payment itself waits for the $100 threshold.
