RPM calculator
Feed in real revenue and views from Studio and get your genuine rate per 1,000 views — then benchmark it, diagnose it if it’s low, and turn it into an income plan.
Find your true RPM
RPM vs CPM, settled once
The two numbers get swapped constantly, and the swap always flatters. CPM is the advertiser’s price per 1,000 ad impressions — before YouTube’s 45% share, and counting only views that showed ads. RPM is your revenue per 1,000 total views — after the share, with every ad-free view averaged in. RPM therefore runs at roughly a third to a half of CPM on the same channel, and it is the only one of the two that multiplies against your views to give real income. When a creator quotes earnings “per 1,000 views”, RPM is the honest version of that sentence.
One Studio nuance worth knowing: the RPM shown in Analytics includes all monetization revenue — ads, memberships, Supers and Premium — spread over views. If you want ad-only RPM (useful when comparing niches), feed just the ad-revenue line into the calculator above.
Benchmark your result
Where computed RPMs land across the platform, assuming meaningful Western viewership. Discount the bands for low-CPM audience maps per the country guide.
| Your RPM | Reading | Typical situation |
|---|---|---|
| under $1 | Low band | Entertainment content, or audiences mostly in low-CPM regions; strategy beats optimization here |
| $1–$4 | The broad middle | Gaming, lifestyle, general education with mixed audiences — most of the platform lives here |
| $4–$10 | Strong | Tech, business, how-to with substantial Western viewership and 8+ minute videos |
| $10–$20 | Top tier | Finance, legal, B2B with US/UK-heavy audiences and buying-stage topics |
| $20+ | Exceptional | Narrow high-intent niches at the right season — enjoy it, and budget on the 12-month average |
Diagnosing a low RPM, in order
When the calculator returns a number below your niche’s band, run this sequence — each step is checkable in Studio in minutes:
- Audience map (Analytics › Audience): a large low-tier-country share is the most common full explanation. Fix direction: English-language, search-targeted, internationally framed content — the playbook in the country guide.
- Content mix: Shorts views mixed into your totals crush blended RPM without reducing long-form earnings. Filter by content type and judge formats separately (economics in Shorts vs long-form).
- Video length: a catalogue under 8:00 is leaving mid-roll revenue unclaimed on every view.
- Ad suitability: yellow-icon videos in your recent uploads shrink the bidder pool. Self-review and appeal per video; adjust the pattern causing them.
- Topic stage: if everything you make is entertainment-stage, add buying-stage videos your audience genuinely needs — reviews, comparisons, “is it worth it” — which auction to commercial bidders.
- Season: if it is January–February, part of the answer is the calendar. Compare against the same month last year, not against December.
Using RPM to plan, not just measure
Once you know your real rate, planning becomes arithmetic. The calculator’s goal field does the division for you, but the three standard plans look like this:
The side-income plan ($500/month): at a $3.50 RPM that is ~143,000 monthly views — reachable for a search-driven channel with 60–80 well-targeted videos compounding.
The salary-replacement plan: a $2,500/month ad floor at $5 RPM needs 500,000 monthly views — or 250,000 views plus one monthly sponsorship at market rates, which is how most full-time creators actually cross the line. Sponsor-readiness is measured with the engagement calculator.
The rate-improvement plan: holding views constant and moving RPM from $2 to $4 doubles income with zero extra traffic. The six levers are on the CPM page; measure monthly, judge quarterly, and treat any single viral week as noise.
