YouTube monetization requirements, 2026
Three tiers, two full routes, and four prerequisites nobody lists. Everything a channel must have before YouTube shares revenue — discussed properly, not just listed.
The three tiers at a glance
YouTube monetization is not one gate but three. Meet any full route and the whole Partner Program opens; the earlier tier unlocks fan funding only.
| Tier | Subscribers | Activity requirement | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fan-funding tier | 500 | 3 public uploads in 90 days, plus 3,000 watch hours (12 mo) or 3M Shorts views (90 days) | Memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, shopping — no ad revenue |
| Full — long-form route | 1,000 | 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months | Everything, including ad revenue share |
| Full — Shorts route | 1,000 | 10,000,000 public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Everything, including ad revenue share |
All figures are rolling windows — old activity ages out continuously. Check your live standing with our eligibility checker or in Studio › Earn.
Each requirement, discussed properly
1,000 subscribers
The subscriber bar is the same on both full routes and is usually the slower gate for search-driven channels and the faster one for Shorts channels. Only real, active subscriptions count — purchased subscribers are detectable, violate the fake-engagement policy, and can end a channel rather than monetize it. Closed accounts and spam subscriptions are removed from your count automatically, which is why totals sometimes tick down without anyone unsubscribing.
4,000 public watch hours
Counted over the trailing 12 months, from public long-form videos and public live streams only. Excluded: Shorts-feed watch time, private/unlisted/deleted videos, and streams switched to private afterwards. Because the window rolls, a six-month posting gap can erase progress silently. The practical unit is average view duration × views — our watch time calculator converts your gap into videos and months.
10 million public Shorts views
Counted over the trailing 90 days, from public Shorts only. The number looks enormous but is reachable for feed-native creators, since Shorts distribution scales to strangers by design. Views must be organic feed views — looping your own content or trading views in pods falls under fake engagement.
The requirements nobody lists
Thresholds qualify you to apply; four background conditions decide whether the application can even be processed:
- An active AdSense account linked to the channel — payments flow through AdSense, including its own identity, address (PIN letter) and tax verification.
- 2-step verification switched on for the Google account.
- No active Community Guidelines strikes on the channel.
- Living in a country where YPP operates — it does in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and most of the world, with payment methods varying by country.
Application checklist
- Confirm both numbers for one route in Studio › Earn — Studio’s counter is the authoritative one.
- Review your catalogue against the monetization policies and remove or fix anything reused or repetitious before review, not after a rejection.
- Set up or link AdSense with your legal name exactly as on your ID — mismatches stall payment verification for weeks.
- Enable 2-step verification.
- Apply, keep uploading normally during review, and expect a decision typically within a few days to a month.
Once accepted, thresholds stop mattering — you are not removed for dipping below them — but the policies keep applying forever, and channels inactive for six months or more can be reviewed. What happens after acceptance is covered in the Partner Program guide.
